Charles & Charles is a great collaboration between two fantastic wine makers to bring us inexpensive quality wines for the masses to enjoy. Charles Smith was Food and Wine Magazine’s 2009 winemaker of the year and Charles Bieler is a renowned French wine maker. I personally love all the wines that Charles Smith make under his own label and Charles Bieler’s Bieler Pere & Fils is one my favorite Rose’s, the two of them together make some of the best value wines around.
For this article I’m going to focus on the only red they produce, Charles & Charles Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah blend. This wine hails from the Columbia Valley in Washington State. The sandy and gravely soils are ideal for grape vines to grow on their own roots. The northerly latitude provides long sunny days during the growing season, providing excellent grape development and the big temperature swings from day to night (about 30 degrees on average) provide amazing balance of sugar and acidity in the grapes. So to say the least they picked an outstanding location for their vineyards.
Charles & Charles Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah blend is a tight and focused wine, reminiscent of old world blends. The wine starts with notes of violet and blackberry on the nose, on the palate you get wonderful dark fruit and currant flavors and it finishes with just the right amount of spice and acid.
In my humble opinion if you are looking to pair a wine with a hearty steak of a lamb dish Charles & Charles Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah blend can’t be beat for the price.
