How to find value wines
Doing your homework will bring enjoyment at ‘your’ price
Value is a subjective term. For some, it may be a great bottle that costs $50 from Napa. For others, it is a bottle that costs $10 from Chile. In this article I am going to focus on the latter - how to find great tasting wines from $7 to $20.
I find that one of the best ways to find a great value wine for under $20 is to look for estate-bottled wines from smaller or newer producers. An estate-bottled wine is one where all the grapes are grown on the winery’s property. The wine is then completely produced, aged and bottled at the winery.
A good comparison for this is a large corporate restaurant vs. a small family-owned café. It’s not that you don’t get a good meal at a chain restaurant, but at the family-owned café, you’re almost always guaranteed a great experience. This is because they put great care into the entire process because it is their personal name and reputation on the line. At the corporate restaurant, they are hiring people as cheap as possible to help their bottom line.
Another way to find quality inexpensive wines is to try wines from lesser-known regions of the world. There are certain climates and types of soil in which grapes grow best to create great wines. This causes the land in these regions to skyrocket in prices. For example, in Napa Valley, California, the cost of an acre of land increased over 200 percent from 1987 to 2006. This caused the prices of their wines to increase as well.
Established wine producers are always searching for new places around the world to grow grapes that have similar terroir and climate to the places they know already make great wines. I find that Washington state and Paso Robles, California are two great places to find good value wines in North America. You can also find great values from Chile and Argentina.
Doing a little research before you purchase wine is the best way to ensure that you will find something that you will enjoy. If you don’t have time to do the research yourself, make sure that you ask a knowledgeable sales associate at your local wine store and they should be able to steer you in the right direction.
